Angola is in talks to export to China this year fishmeal produced in Benguela province, newspaper Jornal de Angola reported on Tuesday.

José Gomes, director of fisheries in Benguela, said a request for such exports had been made to the production plant in Baía Farta in the province. Negotiations were now “under way”, he added, declining to provide other details.

The province produced 285,075 tonnes of fishmeal in the first 11 months of 2015 with most being exported to Namibia and South Africa, the Angolan newspaper said. The selling price was approximately US$1,250 per tonne, the report added.

The production plant in Baía Farta began operations in 2011 with capacity to produce six tonnes of fishmeal per hour, the media outlet said. Fishmeal can be used as animal feed and agricultural fertiliser.
