A Chinese-funded e-commerce platform in Angola, Baobabay, was officially launched last week as the development of this technology is advancing in the African nation, Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Since a trial operation in August, the platform has attracted over 200,000 site visits and started full operation last week with 20,000 registered users, Baobabay Chief Executive Officer, Feng Tao, told Xinhua.

Thanks to “the mushrooming number of Internet and mobile users” in Angola, the platform has quickly gained popularity in the country, the executive said. The goal is to draw 1 million site visits by year-end, he added.

According to the report, more than 3.5 million out of 23 million Angolans have access to Internet. The country’s mobile phone users amount to some 8 million. Most Internet and mobile users in Angola age from 18 to 40, having the largest purchasing power in the nation, the report added.

Based in Angola, Baobabay said it plans to expand the e-commerce platform to other African nations next year.
