The Simão Mendes National Hospital, the main hospital in Guinea-Bissau, is now offering consultations for asthma patients, which is described as “something unprecedented” by the doctor in charge, Ibrahim Silva Danso, a general practitioner trained in China who has been working in the country’s main hospital for a year.
On his return to the country, Danso was invited by the management of Simão Mendes to take over the new asthma consultation unit, which did not exist in Guinea-Bissau. Normally, Guinean asthma patients traveled to Ziguinchor or Dakar, in Senegal, or to Portugal to treat the disease.
Since last December, a team coordinated by Ibrahim Danso in collaboration with the Spanish non-governmental organization Aida, has been holding asthma consultations on Tuesdays at Simão Mendes. “The week after that we already had 25 patients,” noted Ibrahim Danso.
