“We are very interested in establishing and strengthening cooperation and partnerships in fisheries and aquaculture with China,” said André de Paula, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Brazil, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Brazil had been extinguished in 2015 but was recreated by the current Lula government.

“In Brazil, with 8,500 km of coastline, marine aquaculture is still in its infancy”, said André de Paula. “International relations in favor of aquaculture and fishing, especially with China, could contribute to the consolidation of aquaculture and fishing production chains that are known to be more sustainable, which could generate credibility and competitiveness for both countries in the global food market”, he emphasized.

Data from ComexStat for 2022 indicate that the representativeness of the Chinese market for total fish exported from Brazil (US$ 400 million) is around 10% (Mainland China) + 6% (Hong Kong region).
