The Cabo Verdean government is expanding a project to improve urban security which the Chinese government is supporting and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd of China is undertaking, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency says the Cabo Verdean cabinet approved last week the extension of the project from the capital, Praia, to four other cities, which are the main cities on the islands of São Vicente, Sal and Boa Vista.

The report, citing the Cabo Verdean police, says the installation in Praia, Santiago island, of a surveillance system comprising 300 cameras has prevented 40 to 50 crimes a month.

The government expects the project to reduce the urban crime rate by about 30 percent, Lusa says.
