The Portuguese Environment Agency has already issued a favorable environmental impact statement, albeit conditional, for the project by Chinese lithium battery company China Aviation Lithium Battery Technology (CALB), which plans to build a factory in Sines, reports Expresso on March 14.

The planned investment is around 2 billion euros for an installed capacity of almost 43 million cells per year, with a daily output of 23,400 cells per production line. In total, the plant will have five production lines. CALB plans to expand the Sines facility in 2028. There could also be a third phase to double capacity.

It was on March 7 that the APA gave CALB the green light to go ahead with what will be its largest factory in Europe, albeit with an extensive list of more than 90 mandatory compensation and impact minimization measures that the Chinese company will have to comply with if it wants to build the industrial unit.
