Energy group State Grid Corporation of China is interested in acquiring power transmission assets in Brazil held by Spanish conglomerate Abengoa SA, news agency Reuters reported.

State Grid said it has not yet made a formal proposal to Abengoa, the news agency added, quoting a statement it received from the Chinese firm.

According to Reuters, Abengoa holds concessions to build and operate 6,300-kilometres (3,915-miles) of transmission lines in Brazil. The Spanish group opened pre-insolvency proceedings last year in Spain, the media outlet added.

Brazil’s Energy Minister, Eduardo Braga, said this week the government was talking to two foreign groups regarding Abengoa transmission lines, Reuters said. State Grid declined to say if it was one of them.

In November, State Grid said it planned to invest 15 billion reais (US$3.98 billion) over the following five years in Brazil. The amount includes an investment of around 10 billion reais in two power transmission lines that will transport the electricity produced at Brazil’s Belo Monte hydroelectric facility.
