An exhibition of Portuguese Azulejo painted and glazed tile work has opened in Beijing on Tuesday, the Palace Museum there has announced.
The museum issued a written announcement saying the exhibition, called “The Land of Glazed Cities: 500 Years of Azulejo in Portugal,” comprises 50 pieces of Azulejo tile work made between the 16th Century and the 21st Century.
The statement says the exhibition was the first-ever collaboration between the Palace Museum and the National Museum of the Azulejo in Portugal.
The Palace Museum says frequent Sino-Portuguese trade and cultural interaction over the centuries means that Chinese porcelain craftsmanship and aesthetics have influenced Azulejo tile work somewhat.
The exhibition, in the Palace of Eternal Longevity section of the museum, will close on October 7, the Palace Museum says.
