Chinese investors intend to explore heavy sands in Pebane, a coastal district in central Mozambique, as announced on the 20th of June during a community meeting to assess environmental impacts.

Investment in the village of Nicadine, in Zambézia province, is expected to be around US$15 million, Radio Mozambique reported.

The project will take place in a concession of 9,000 hectares, in which exploitation is authorized for an area of 532 hectares, with the remainder reserved for agricultural activities. It is estimated that it is possible to extract one million tons of ilmenite and 324 tons of zircon.

China appears to be one of the main export destinations for this type of extractive products in Mozambican territory, with Chinese companies also holding several mining concessions in the Portuguese-speaking country.
