Macau represents 90% of Portuguese direct investment in China, said the consul general of Portugal in Macau, Alexandre Leitão, reveals the Macau News Agency portal.

Macau was the 12th destination for Portuguese direct investment abroad, receiving almost 1.1 billion euros in 2023, while the interior of China received 55 million euros, said Alexandre Leitão on November 18, at an event held by the Macau Delegation of the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The diplomat added that Portuguese investment was made mainly in pharmaceuticals, banking, finance, insurance and food products.

At the time, the consul general of Portugal for Macau and Hong Kong recognized the importance of this investment. However, he highlighted the need for Lisbon to expand commercial activity beyond Macau.
