The 12th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, organised by the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, has been successfully concluded. This year, for the first time, the event was held in a hybrid online and offline format, in response to the impact of COVID-19 around the world.


Channels used to host the Cultural Week included a themed website and partnerships with local broadcaster TDM and other media. A total of 35,000 visitors engaged with the activities held online. In addition, there were more than 1,000 in-person visits to the exhibitions held offline at the China – Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex.


In line with past editions of the Cultural Week, the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao invited students from education institutions in Macao to take part in the event. That was in order to further the knowledge of students regarding Forum Macao, and the culture and the arts of the Portuguese-speaking Countries. Education institutions invited to take part included: Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI); Escola Luso-Chinesa Técnico-Profissional; Macau Portuguese School; Pui Ching Middle School; Santa Rosa de Lima College – Chinese Section; Our Lady of Fátima Girls’ School; and Macau Xin Hua School.


More than 200 teachers and students visited the exhibitions at the China – Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex, namely the showcase on the achievements of Forum Macao and the art exhibitions. The visits allowed participants to improve their knowledge about the development of Forum Macao and its achievements so far, and also to meet and hold exchanges with exhibiting artists, and with Representatives of Portuguese-speaking Countries in the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao.


The exhibitions were a showcase of cultural cooperation and exchanges between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries. Students said the visits were beneficial for them, as they were an opportunity to further their understanding of Macao’s role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries.


MPI sent close to 40 students from the Bachelor Degree Programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation, to act as interns to the Cultural Week and provide support for the visits to the exhibitions. Each internship lasted for two weeks. The MPI students engaged in the scheme stated it was a unique extracurricular educational activity, allowing them to learn more about Macao’s role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries. They added that such a role had great potential, and underlined the importance of their decision to study Portuguese. Those students also said they hoped to use their professional skills to help further Macao’s platform role linking China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries.
