Struggling Brazilian dairies are hoping to tap a rise in demand for dairy products in China for additional income, the China Global Television Network (CGTN) reports.

Although Brazilian dairy farmers produce only about enough dairy to cover the country’s domestic needs, the Chinese state-run international broadcaster says they can increase their output quickly to meet demand abroad.

“We can expand pastures and we also have production of grains to give good quality feed to the cows,” CGTN quotes Alexandre Guerra, president of the union of dairy producers of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as saying.

In August Reuters news agency quoted the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture as saying the Chinese authorities had permitted 24 Brazilian dairies to export cheese, butter, condensed milk, powdered milk and other products to China.
