The Chinese company BYD has invested a further R$6 million in a new Research and Development (R&D) laboratory in Campinas, which will be the first in Latin America dedicated to studying the entire production cycle of photovoltaic modules, from the processing of quartz (silicon ore) to the testing of final products.
According to Rodrigo Garcia, R&D manager at BYD Energy, "this initiative only proves that Brazil has the potential to be self-sufficient in the production of photovoltaic modules, as it was the 3rd largest exporter of silicon in the world in 2022. Our aim is to stimulate and strengthen production on home territory, with research and development direct from Brazil.
The new laboratory was inaugurated on the 15th of December at a ceremony attended by Stella Li, BYD's global executive vice-president, Tyler Li, CEO of BYD Brasil, Dário Saad, Mayor of Campinas, and Felicio Ramuth, Deputy Governor of São Paulo.
