Several Chinese firms are currently in talks to purchase Brazilian wind farms with an aggregate energy output capacity of 750 megawatts and Brazilian solar parks with an aggregate energy output capacity of 600 megawatts, reported news agency Reuters.
The news was given on Wednesday by Charles Tang, head of the Brazil-China Chamber of Commerce. He said a total of six entities – Chinese power generation firms and Chinese investment funds – were involved in the negotiations. He declined to give further details.
He added, as quoted by the Brazilian press, that the U.S. dollar value of those potential deals ran into several billions. He also noted that many Chinese firms were interested in Brazil, as the projects there provided a good return on invested capital.
State-run Chinese utilities firm State Grid Corporation of China is currently building two transmission lines connecting several Brazilian cities to the Belo Monte hydropower plant, which will become the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam once it is completed, probably by 2019.
The Chinese firm last year pledged to invest 15 billion reais (US$3.98 billion) in the South American country over the following five years.
